Don’t Be a Victim: Nigeria’s Top 5 Mobile Banking Scams Exposed—and How to Stop Them

With over 60 million active mobile-banking users in Nigeria and fraud losses topping ₦10 billion annually (Source: NIBSS reports), your phone is your bank—and a prime target for scammers. While mobile banking brings incredible convenience, it also opens the door to sophisticated fraud. Knowledge is your best defense.

1. The SIM Swap Trap

· How it Works: Scammers use your personal details to convince your mobile operator to issue a replacement SIM with your number. Once they control your number, they intercept your SMS alerts and OTPs, then drain your accounts.

· Red Flag: Your phone suddenly loses signal or shows "No Service," while others around you are fine.

· Protection: Set a SIM lock PIN with your network provider. If your signal drops unexpectedly, use another phone to call your bank and mobile operator immediately.

· Case in Point: Consider the recent case of Mr. Adebola, a Lagos-based professional who woke up to find his salary gone after a scammer used a SIM swap to reset his banking PIN overnight.

2. The Fake Bank Alert (Phishing)

· How it Works: You receive an urgent SMS or email that looks like it’s from your bank, asking you to click a link to “fix a problem.” The link leads to a counterfeit site that steals your login credentials.

· Red Flag: Subtle typos in the sender's name or URL (e.g., “Acess Bank” instead of “Access Bank”).

· Protection: Never click links in unsolicited bank messages. Always type your bank’s official URL directly into your browser or use their official mobile app.

· Case in Point: In a widely reported scam, over a thousand bank customers fell for a phishing text promising BVN updates, losing thousands of Naira each before the fake site was shut down.

3. The Impersonation Call

· How it Works: A fraudster calls, posing as a bank officer, and creates a sense of panic. They then ask you to “verify” your card number, PIN, or OTP to “secure” your funds.

· Red Flag: Any request for your full card number, PIN, or OTP over the phone is a guaranteed scam.

· Protection: Your bank will never call to ask for these details. Hang up immediately. If worried, call the official number on the back of your card.

· Case in Point: A Port Harcourt trader lost ₦80,000 after a convincing “bank agent” tricked him into sharing an OTP under the threat of account closure.

4. The Malicious “Bonus” App

· How it Works: An app promising “instant loans” or “free data” is actually spyware. Once installed, it reads your SMS, captures your PIN entries, and forwards your OTPs to the attacker.

· Red Flag: The app is not on the official Google Play or Apple App Store, or it asks for excessive permissions (like reading all your messages).

· Protection: Only install financial apps from official stores. Be skeptical of any app promising rewards that seem too good to be true.

· Case in Point: Mrs. Okeke in Enugu downloaded a fake "QuickLoan NG" app from a website. Within hours, the app had forwarded her bank OTPs to fraudsters who emptied her account.

5. The “Get Rich Quick” Investment Scam

· How it Works: You’re added to a WhatsApp or Telegram group promising "guaranteed" daily returns. They pressure you to transfer funds to what is actually a personal account, and then they vanish.

· Red Flag: Claims of "risk-free, high returns" and insistence on transfers to a personal bank account.

· Protection: Legitimate investments always carry risk and use official corporate accounts. Avoid any scheme that uses high-pressure tactics.

· Case in Point: A university student in Abuja was persuaded to invest ₦150,000 in a crypto scheme promising daily payouts. The scammers shut down the group chat and disappeared with his money.
